What Does the Name George Mean?

George comes from the Greek name Geōrgios (Γεώργιος), formed from gē (γῆ), meaning "earth," and ergon (ἔργον), meaning "work." Put together, the components describe an "earth-worker" - that is, a farmer or tiller of the soil. That literal sense is also the ordinary meaning the name carried in Greek, where geōrgos was the usual word for a farmer. The name moved into Latin as Georgius, and from Latin into the languages of Europe, reaching English as George.

George Name History & Origins

The name is Greek and was common in the Greek-speaking eastern Mediterranean in late antiquity. Its spread through Europe followed the veneration of Saint George, a Christian soldier said to have been martyred in the early fourth century, by tradition at Lydda in Palestine. Whether he was a historical individual is uncertain, and the surviving accounts of him were written later than the events they describe. Devotion to him took hold in both the Byzantine East and the Latin West, which carried the name into new languages.

The famous story of George slaying a dragon to save a princess is a medieval legend, not an early account of his life; it appears in Western sources from roughly the eleventh and twelfth centuries. In England, George was taken as a patron figure: Edward III made him patron of the Order of the Garter in the fourteenth century, and he came to be regarded as a national patron saint.

From Latin Georgius came a range of European forms, including Italian Giorgio, Spanish and Portuguese Jorge, French Georges, German Georg, Dutch Joris, Polish Jerzy, and the Russian forms Yuri and Yegor. The name was in use in England during the Middle Ages, and four Hanoverian kings of Britain, beginning with George I in 1714, later bore it.
