What Does the Name Robert Mean?

Robert means "bright fame" and comes from Germanic, specifically the Frankish language that fed into Old French. The name is a compound of two Germanic elements: *hrōþiz (fame, glory) and *berhtaz (bright, shining). Their union is literally "fame-bright" or "bright in fame," conventionally translated as "bright fame." It comes from Proto-Germanic *Hrōþiberhtaz, which developed into Frankish *Hrōdberht and then Old French Robert. The name is not originally English, though a native Old English cognate, Hroðbeorht, existed.

Robert Name History & Origins

The Germanic name passed into Old French as Robert, and the Normans brought that form to England after the Norman Conquest of 1066. Native Old English Hroðbeorht was a cognate, but it did not become the modern English name. In medieval England, Robert was common, and Latin documents often wrote it as Robertus. It was borne by Norman and English nobles, including Robert Curthose, eldest son of William the Conqueror, and by Robert the Bruce, King of Scots. On the continent, the same Germanic root produced Old High German Hruodperht (later Ruprecht) and Old Norse Hróðbjartr. English speakers later formed the short forms Rob, Bob, Robbie, and Bert; Bob developed as a rhyming nickname for Rob. Several saints have borne the name, including Saint Robert Bellarmine (1542 - 1621).
