What Does the Name Giovanni Mean?

Giovanni is the Italian form of John, a name whose meaning is traditionally given as "God is gracious." It derives from Hebrew Yochanan (יוֹחָנָן), generally analyzed as a shortened form of Yehochanan, combining a short form of the divine name YHWH with the verb hanan, "to be gracious" or "to show favor." The literal sense is therefore closer to "YHWH is gracious"; "God is gracious" is the customary English translation. The name passed from Hebrew into Greek as Ioannes (Ἰωάννης) and then into Latin as Iohannes, also spelled Johannes. Italian inherited and reshaped the Latin form into Giovanni. The English equivalent is John.

Giovanni Name History & Origins

The Hebrew name Yochanan is attested in the Hebrew Bible, and related forms were used in Jewish sources of the Second Temple period. The name's use in early Christianity was reinforced by two prominent New Testament figures: John the Baptist and John the Apostle, both called Ioannes in Greek. As Christian communities adopted Greek and Latin names, the Latin form Iohannes became common in western Europe. From that Latin base, Italian developed Giovanni, a form recorded in medieval Italian documents and literature. The name was borne by many Italian churchmen, including popes whose name is rendered Giovanni in Italian, as well as by writers and artists such as Giovanni Boccaccio and Giovanni Bellini. Italian speakers also created shortened and affectionate forms from it, including Gianni and Gian. Mozart and Da Ponte's opera Don Giovanni (1787) gave the name a famous dramatic association, but the opera drew on an existing personal name and an older Don Juan legend.
