What Does the Name Gabriel Mean?

Gabriel comes from the Hebrew name Gavri'el (גַּבְרִיאֵל), traditionally rendered "God is my strength" or "man of God." It is built from two elements: El, a general Hebrew word for God, and a first element that is explained in two ways. One explanation traces it to gever, "man" or "strong man," which gives the literal sense "man of God." Another connects it to the root gabar, "to be strong," which supports the customary translation "God is my strength." The two explanations point in a similar direction, and the exact derivation of the first element is not fully settled.

Gabriel Name History & Origins

Gabriel is one of the few angels named in the Hebrew Bible. He appears in the Book of Daniel, where he explains visions to Daniel, and the Book of Enoch lists him among the archangels. In the Gospel of Luke he announces the births of John the Baptist to Zechariah and of Jesus to Mary. The same figure appears in the Quran as Jibril, who brings the revelation to Muhammad. These scriptural roles carried the name through Jewish, Christian, and Muslim communities.

From the Hebrew Gavri'el, the name was written in Greek as Gabriēl and in Latin as Gabriel, the form that then passed into most of Europe. It appears in medieval English records and took national forms across the continent: Gabriele in Italian, Gabriel in French, Spanish, Portuguese, and German, Gavriil in Russian, and Gábor in Hungarian. Feminine forms such as Gabrielle and Gabriella come from the same source.
