What Does the Name Theo Mean?

Theo comes from the Greek word theos, meaning "god." That element, theo-, stands at the front of a large family of Greek personal names, most familiar in Theodore (Greek Theodoros, from theos "god" plus doron "gift"), its feminine counterpart Theodora, and names such as Theophilos ("loved by God") and Theodosios. In each of these, theo- supplies the same first idea: a god, or God in Christian use.

Taken by itself, then, Theo has the literal sense "god," and as a short form it borrows the fuller sense of whichever name it stands for, so it is often glossed "gift of God" through the Theodore and Theodora line. That gloss is a customary reading of the compound names, not the direct meaning of the element theos. It also does not apply to every name that shortens to Theo: Theobald and Theodoric are Germanic names built on theud- "people," and their clipped Theo has no link to the Greek word.

Theo Name History & Origins

Theo originated as a spoken shortening rather than a formal name. In Greek, theos was the ordinary word for a deity, and it formed the first half of many personal names that spread with Greek language and later with Christianity - Theodoros, Theodora, Theophilos, Theodosios, Theophanes, and others. As these names passed into Latin and then into the languages of Europe, the opening syllables were shortened in daily speech, and Theo became a natural nickname. Saint Theodore and Saint Theodora were widely venerated, which kept the full names and their short forms in circulation.

In the Dutch-speaking regions, the short form became a given name in its own right. Theo has long been common in the Netherlands and Belgium as the everyday form of Theodorus, with the feminine Thea used in the same way. German speakers likewise use Theo, and in English it served for a long time chiefly as a familiar form of Theodore before being chosen frequently as a name on its own.

A separate line of names happens to shorten the same way. Theobald and Theodoric are Germanic in origin, from theud- "people"; Theodoric the Great, the sixth-century Ostrogothic king, bears one of them. Their similarity to the Greek theo- names is a coincidence of sound, and a Theo shortened from them carries a different background entirely.
