What Does the Name Myles Mean?

Myles is an English spelling of the given name Miles, which came into English from Old French Miles. The French form descends from the Germanic personal name Milo, and the meaning of that Germanic name is not securely known. The explanation most often repeated links it to Latin miles, "soldier" (genitive militis), the word medieval Latin also used for a knight. That fits the name's medieval military flavor, but the sounds of Milo do not develop naturally from miles, so the link may be a later association rather than the original source.

A second explanation derives Milo from a Germanic root meaning "mild" or "merciful," a sense also carried by Slavic names built on mil-, such as Miloš and Milan. Neither explanation can be confirmed from the surviving evidence, so the oldest meaning of the name is best described as uncertain. A separate route into use exists in Ireland, where Myles has been used as an English form of the Gaelic Maol Íosa, "servant of Jesus"; that Gaelic name also lies behind the Irish surname sometimes written Miles.

Myles Name History & Origins

The Germanic name Milo is recorded in early medieval Europe in Frankish and Lombard territory, and Norman settlers carried its Old French descendant Miles to England, where it appears as both a given name and a surname from the 11th and 12th centuries onward. Medieval England used it steadily for churchmen, knights, and landowners, and the name also turns up in chronicles and romances of the period. The spelling Myles is a later English variant that became common in the 16th and 17th centuries; it is the form used for Myles Coverdale, whose 1535 Bible was the first complete printed English Bible, and for Myles Standish, the military adviser at Plymouth Colony in the 1620s.

In Ireland, Myles was used as the English form of the Gaelic Maol Íosa. The name remained current there in later centuries: the 20th-century Irish writer Brian O'Nolan wrote a satirical newspaper column under the pen name Myles na gCopaleen. The related spelling Miles also survives as a surname throughout the English-speaking world, while the y-spelling has stayed an accepted English variant.
