What Does the Name Turon Mean?
Turon is a Central Asian name, best explained as an Uzbek spelling of Turan, the historical name for the steppe country north and east of the Amu Darya (the Oxus River). The word is Persian in origin: Tūr, a figure of Iranian legend, plus the place-forming suffix -ān, giving the sense "land of Tur." In the Shahnameh, the epic compiled by Ferdowsi around the year 1000, Tur is the eldest son of the legendary king Fereydun and receives the eastern lands as his share. Older Avestan texts use Tūra for a people living beyond the Oxus, which is the earliest layer behind the name.
The ending -on reflects Uzbek writing and pronunciation rather than a separate origin. The similar-looking Spanish place name Turón, found in Asturias and in Granada, is generally treated as unrelated; its own derivation is not securely explained.
Turon Name History & Origins
Turan appears in Middle Persian and later Persian sources as the name of the lands beyond the Oxus, set against Iran to the south. Ferdowsi's Shahnameh uses Turan for the realm of Tur and his descendants, and the long struggle between Iran and Turan supplies much of the epic's story. The regional name spread across Central Asia, and in modern Uzbek it is written and pronounced Turon; it occurs there in place names and as a given name.
Outside Central Asia, Turon is uncommon as a personal name and is encountered more often as a place name. The Asturian parish of Turón, in the municipality of Mieres, is known for its coal-mining history, and there is also a Turón in the province of Granada; these Spanish uses belong to a different naming tradition from the Persian and Central Asian one.
