What Does the Name Justin Mean?

Justin comes from the Latin name Iustinus, a Roman family name (cognomen) formed from Iustus, meaning "just" or "upright." Iustus goes back to the Latin ius, "law" or "right," so the literal sense is "just" or "righteous." The ending -inus is a common Latin suffix used to build one name or word from another. The root was originally a Roman surname rather than a personal given name, and early Christians adopted it as a personal name.

Justin Name History & Origins

The best-known early bearer is Justin Martyr, a Greek-speaking philosopher who converted to Christianity in the second century and wrote defenses of the faith; he was put to death in Rome around 165. The Greek writers who recorded him used the Latin form Iustinus. Because saints' names were widely given to children in Christian communities, the name spread through the church.

It also reached imperial use in the Byzantine Empire. Justin I ruled from 518 to 527, and his nephew Justinian I succeeded him; a later emperor, Justin II, reigned in the second half of the sixth century. Through Latin and the medieval church the name passed into Western Europe, where it appears in records from the Middle Ages onward, though it remained relatively uncommon in England.

The same Latin root produced the feminine form Justine and the longer masculine Justinian. Other European languages adapted the name in their own ways, such as French Justin and Italian Giustino.
