What Does the Name Albert Mean?
Albert is a masculine given name of Germanic origin. Its established meaning is "noble and bright," from the Old High German name Adalbert: adal "noble" plus beraht "bright." The second element became -bert in many names of Germanic origin, such as Robert and Herbert. The name passed into medieval Latin as Albertus and into Old French as Albert, the form that entered English. The literal sense is "noble and bright"; it is not a description of a particular person's character.
Albert Name History & Origins
The older Germanic form Adalbert was used in Frankish and German lands in the early Middle Ages. Latin documents record it as Adalbertus and later often as Albertus. The shorter form Albert developed through Old French, where the first element was shortened; it is this French form that lies behind the modern English name. Old English had a cognate, Æþelbeorht, built from the same two elements, but it is not the direct source of English Albert.
The name was borne by medieval clergy and nobles. Albert the Great (Albertus Magnus, c. 1200 - 1280), a Dominican theologian and bishop of Regensburg, is a well-known medieval bearer; he was later declared a Doctor of the Church. Albert of Jerusalem (d. 1214), the Latin patriarch of Jerusalem, is traditionally associated with the rule given to the Carmelite order. In England, the Latinized Albertus appears in medieval records, but the vernacular Albert was not among the most common names of the period.
Related forms in other languages include German Albrecht, Italian and Spanish Alberto, and French Aubert. The short form Bert is also used in English. In the 19th century, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1819 - 1861), husband of Queen Victoria, was a prominent bearer; his name is commemorated in the Royal Albert Hall and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
