What Does the Name Angel Mean?

Angel comes from the Latin angelus and the Greek angelos, both of which mean "messenger." In early Jewish and Christian scripture, Greek angelos was used to translate the Hebrew mal'akh, also "messenger," and in that religious setting the word took on the specific sense of a heavenly messenger sent by God. The name's established meaning is therefore "messenger" or, in its customary religious reading, "messenger of God." The deeper origin of Greek angelos is not fully settled; a commonly mentioned but unproven suggestion is that it was borrowed from an Iranian word for a mounted courier or messenger.

Angel Name History & Origins

The word reached English through Old English engel, which was borrowed from Latin angelus during the Christianization of the Anglo-Saxons. In Spain and Latin America, Ángel is a long-established masculine given name, with the feminine form Ángela. In English-speaking countries, Angel is used for both men and women, though from the twentieth century onward it has been more often given to girls.

Angel shares its root with several other names rather than descending from them: the Italian masculine Angelo, and the feminine Angela and Angelina, all built on the same Latin angelus. The Spanish masculine Ángel and the English name are parallel uses of that word rather than one being a variant of the other.
