What Does the Name Aiden Mean?

Aiden is an English spelling of the Irish name Aodhán, a diminutive of Aodh, an Old Irish personal name meaning "fire." The element aodh, earlier áed, goes back to an old Celtic word for fire, and the ending -án is a diminutive suffix, so the name is literally "little fire." Aiden is generally treated as a variant spelling of Aidan, the long-established English form of the same Irish name. The literal sense is "little fire"; the looser gloss "fiery" that appears in some name books is a customary interpretation rather than a separate etymology.

Aiden Name History & Origins

Irish Áed was a common name in the early Middle Ages and was borne by several kings and saints. Its diminutive Áedán appears in the records of the Irish church, and the best-known bearer is St. Aidan of Lindisfarne (died 651), an Irish monk from Iona who founded the monastery at Lindisfarne and led the conversion of Northumbria. His name was written in Latin as Aidanus, and the anglicized form Aidan remained in use in Ireland. Another early church figure, Máedóc of Ferns, is also remembered as Áedán or Aidan.

The spelling Aiden, with an e in the second syllable, is a later English variant of Aidan; both spellings are now current in English. The name is not related to the similar-sounding Turkish name Aydın, which means "bright, enlightened" and has a separate Turkic origin.
