What Does the Name Vincent Mean?
Vincent comes from the Latin name Vincentius, which is built on vincens, the present participle of the verb vincere, meaning "to conquer" or "to win." Its literal sense is therefore "conquering" or "prevailing."
The customary interpretation, "conquering," stays close to that Latin root, and the meaning has remained essentially the same in the languages that borrowed the name.
Vincent Name History & Origins
The name entered Christian use early. Saint Vincent of Saragossa, a deacon put to death around 304 during the Roman persecutions, became one of the most widely venerated martyrs of the early church, particularly in Spain. Devotion to him helped carry the name through the western Mediterranean, and it appears among clergy and monks in later centuries, such as Vincent of Lérins, a monk and writer active in the early 400s on the island of Lérins off the coast of southern France.
From Latin Vincentius, the name passed into Old French as Vincent and from there into English. It also took distinct regional forms: Vicente in Spanish and Portuguese, Vincenzo in Italian, Wincenty in Polish, and Vinzenz in German.
Later religious figures reinforced its use, among them Saint Vincent Ferrer, a Valencian Dominican preacher who died in 1419, and Saint Vincent de Paul, a French priest and founder of charitable congregations who lived from 1581 to 1660.
How Popular is the Name Vincent?
