What Does the Name Samuel Mean?
Samuel is the English form of the Hebrew name Shmuel (שְׁמוּאֵל). Its usual meaning is "God has heard." The Hebrew name is often analyzed as a combination of shama (שָׁמַע), "to hear," and El (אֵל), "God," though the exact formation and vowel pattern are not certain. A competing explanation connects shem (שֵׁם), "name," with El, yielding "name of God" or "his name is God." The biblical story in 1 Samuel 1:20 gives a different wordplay: Hannah says, "I have asked him of the LORD," linking the name to sha'al (שָׁאַל), "to ask." That narrative explanation is traditional and does not settle the older etymology. The customary English meaning remains "God has heard."
Samuel Name History & Origins
The name Samuel comes from the Hebrew Bible, where Samuel is a prophet and judge, the son of Hannah and Elkanah. He anoints Saul as king and later anoints David, and the books of 1 and 2 Samuel are named for him. Jewish communities have used the Hebrew name Shmuel since antiquity. In the Greek Septuagint the name appears as Samouēl (Σαμουήλ), and in the Latin Vulgate as Samuel (also written Samuhel in some manuscripts and traditions). From Latin it passed into European vernaculars, including Old French and Middle English, usually in the form Samuel. The name also appears in the New Testament in Acts 3:24, where Samuel is named among the prophets. In English, the name was used by Protestants after the Reformation, alongside other biblical Hebrew names. Short forms such as Sam and Sammy developed later. The name should not be confused with Saul, which comes from a different Hebrew root, even though the biblical story of Samuel's birth puns on the sound of sha'al, "to ask."
