What Does the Name Patrick Mean?
Patrick comes from the Latin name Patricius, which means "patrician" - a member of the hereditary noble class of ancient Rome. The word is built on Latin pater ("father"), the term Romans used for senators, who were collectively called patres. So the literal sense of Patricius is "belonging to the patricians," and the customary interpretation, carried over into the modern name, is simply "noble."
The Irish form Pádraig is a borrowing of the Latin name rather than a native Gaelic word with its own separate root. The feminine form Patricia comes from the same Latin adjective in its feminine shape, patricia.
Patrick Name History & Origins
Latin Patricius was a common name in the later Roman world. Its best-known bearer is the fifth-century missionary now called Saint Patrick, a native of Roman Britain who was captured as a youth, enslaved in Ireland, and later returned there as a bishop. His surviving Latin writings, the Confessio and the letter to Coroticus, use the name Patricius. Through the Irish church the name entered the Gaelic tradition as Old Irish Patraicc, which developed into Modern Irish Pádraig and Scottish Gaelic Pàdraig; medieval spellings such as Patric and Patrik appear before the modern English form settled.
Because of the saint's central place in Irish Christianity, the name became widespread in Ireland and Scotland, and it also produced Irish surnames: Fitzpatrick, from Norman French fitz ("son of"); Mac Giolla Phádraig, "son of the servant of Patrick"; and Kilpatrick. The anglicized short form Paddy, from Pádraig, became a familiar nickname for Irishmen. The saint's feast day, March 17, is observed as Ireland's national day.
The English given name Patrick is recorded in the medieval period, but it was far more common in Ireland and Gaelic Scotland than in England until later centuries, when Irish migration carried it more widely into English-speaking use. Whether the English form came into use mainly through Irish Pádraig or directly from Latin Patricius is not firmly settled, since both routes were available.
