What Does the Name Evelyn Mean?

Evelyn is an English name that came into use through a surname, which in turn came from the Norman French feminine name Aveline (also recorded as Avelina). Aveline is generally explained as a diminutive of Ava, a name of Germanic origin. The meaning of Ava itself is not securely known, so the literal sense of Evelyn is uncertain; reference works sometimes offer a gloss such as "desired," but this is a customary interpretation rather than a documented Germanic root. A separate and often-cited association links Aveline to the Old French aveline, "hazelnut," a word derived from Latin abellana nux, "nut of Abella" (Avella, a town in Italy). Whether that word gave rise to the name or merely influenced its spelling is debated, and it is distinct from the Germanic name Ava.

Evelyn Name History & Origins

Evelyn began as an English surname, recorded from the 13th century and held by a family in Surrey; the diarist and gardener John Evelyn (1620 - 1706) was one of its later bearers. The surname came from the female given name Aveline, which Norman French speakers brought to England after the Conquest. From the 17th century onward, Evelyn also appears as a first name for both men and women. In Britain it was notably common for boys in the 19th century - the colonial administrator Evelyn Baring, 1st Earl of Cromer (1841 - 1917), and the novelist Evelyn Waugh (1903 - 1966) are well-known male bearers - while it continued in use for girls as well. Over the course of the 20th century it became predominantly a female name. The related feminine forms Evelina and Eveline developed alongside it, and all of these trace back to the medieval Aveline.
