What Does the Name Georgia Mean?

Georgia is the feminine form of George. It goes back to the Greek name Geōrgios (Γεώργιος), which comes from geōrgos (γεωργός), "farmer" or "earth-worker." That noun joins gē (γῆ), "earth," to ergon (ἔργον), "work," so the literal sense is a person who works the land - a tiller of the soil. The meaning is occupational rather than symbolic; the "earth" element refers to soil and farming, not to the planet.

Georgios passed into Latin as Georgius, and the feminine form Georgia was built from it. English received the name through Latin and, for the masculine form, through Old French Georges.

Georgia Name History & Origins

The masculine Geōrgios was a common name in the Greek-speaking world and spread along with Christianity. Saint George, a soldier said to have been martyred around 303, became one of the most widely honored saints, and devotion to him carried the name into Latin as Georgius and then into the languages of western Europe. Through Old French Georges, it entered English as George.

Feminine forms developed alongside the masculine one: Greek Geōrgia and Latin Georgia. Other feminines of the same root in English and French include Georgiana, Georgina, and the French-derived Georgette. Georgia has been used as a given name in the English-speaking world since at least the 18th century.

The place name Georgia is a separate matter. The British colony founded in 1732 was named for King George II, and the country of Georgia in the Caucasus has a different, disputed origin for its English name.
