What Does the Name Eloise Mean?
Eloise is the English form of the French feminine name Héloïse. Its meaning is uncertain. The most common explanation derives it from a Germanic name such as Helewidis, formed from elements meaning "healthy, whole" and "wide" (sometimes also explained as "wood"). If that derivation is correct, the literal sense would be something like "healthy and wide."
A competing explanation connects Héloïse to the Latin family name Helvidius, whose meaning is not clear. Because the early forms are not fully understood, the familiar gloss "healthy, wide" is a proposed etymology rather than a secure translation. Eloise is not a form of Louise; Louise comes from Louis, a Germanic name meaning "famous warrior."
Eloise Name History & Origins
The name is French in form and appears in the Middle Ages as Héloïse, with Latin records using Heloisa and Heloysa. Its best-known medieval bearer was Héloïse d'Argenteuil, a 12th-century scholar who studied with Peter Abelard, married him secretly, and later became a nun and abbess of the Paraclete. Their correspondence became one of the most famous works of medieval Latin literature.
French also has the spelling Éloïse without the initial H, and English uses Eloise alongside the H-form Heloise. The name passed into other European languages as Spanish and Portuguese Eloísa and Italian Eloisa. In English, Eloise is a form of the French name and is much older than its modern literary appearances.
A well-known modern literary use is Kay Thompson's Eloise (1955), a children's book about a girl living at the Plaza Hotel in New York. That book is a literary association, not the name's origin or earliest record.
