What Does the Name Lucia Mean?

Lucia is the feminine form of the Latin name Lucius and shares the root of the Latin noun lux (genitive lucis), meaning "light." Its literal sense is therefore "light." Lucius was an old Roman given name (praenomen), and Lucia was formed as its feminine counterpart. The usual explanation connects Lucius with lux, but some scholars have instead proposed lucus, "grove" or "sacred wood," as the source; the two Latin words resemble each other, and which one lies behind the name is not fully settled. Christian usage later attached the customary reading "bringer of light," which is a symbolic association rather than a literal translation.

Lucia Name History & Origins

Lucia was in use as a Roman woman's name. Its best-known early bearer is Saint Lucia of Syracuse, a Christian martyr traditionally dated to about 304, during the persecution under the emperor Diocletian. Her feast on December 13 was kept from early times, and her name is one of the women's names included in the Roman Canon of the Mass, which helped spread devotion to her across Europe.

The name traveled with Latin into the vernacular languages. Italian, Spanish, Romanian, German, Dutch, and the Scandinavian languages use Lucia; Spanish also writes Lucía, Portuguese Lúcia, and French and Czech use Lucie. English has both Lucia, borrowed from Latin and the Romance languages, and the French-derived Lucy, the older and more common English form of the same name. The Caribbean island of Saint Lucia is named for the saint.

In Scandinavia, December 13 is observed as Lucia Day (Luciadagen), with processions led by a girl wearing a crown of candles; because the date fell near the winter solstice on the older calendar, the feast became associated with light in the darkest part of the year. The present form of the Swedish celebration took shape in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Lucia also appears in literature: as a guiding figure in Dante's Divine Comedy, and as the title character of Donizetti's opera Lucia di Lammermoor (1835), based on Walter Scott's novel The Bride of Lammermoor.
