What Does the Name Lucy Mean?

Lucy is the English feminine form of Lucia, a Latin name meaning "light." Lucia is the feminine of the Roman male name Lucius, commonly explained as coming from Latin lux (genitive lucis). The same root appears in lucēre, "to shine," and is related to an Indo-European root for brightness.

Lucy Name History & Origins

Lucia was used in ancient Rome as the feminine form of Lucius. Its best-known early bearer is Saint Lucia of Syracuse, a Christian martyr traditionally dated to the persecution under Diocletian around 304. Devotion to her spread through the Christian Mediterranean and later across Europe, carrying the name into many languages: Lucia in Italian and Spanish, Lucie in French, and Lucy in English. In medieval England, the name is found in Latin documents as Lucia and in English use as Lucy, a form influenced by Old French Lucie. Saint Lucy's feast on December 13 was widely observed; in Scandinavia, where her feast fell near the winter solstice, it developed into a tradition of candlelit processions. The English name also appears in later literature, including John Donne's poem "A Nocturnal upon St. Lucy's Day," which takes the saint's feast as its occasion.
