What Does the Name Avery Mean?
Avery is an English name taken from the English surname Avery, which comes from a Norman French personal name. It is most often explained as meaning "elf counsel," from the Old English elements ælf ("elf") and ræd ("counsel, advice") - the same source as the name Alfred, which the Normans used in the form Alvred.
Some references instead link the surname to the Old English personal name Ælfrīc, "elf ruler," whose second element is rīc ("power, ruler"). Others connect it to the Germanic name Alberic, which entered medieval French as Aubri and became the English Aubrey. Because these Old English and Norman forms resemble one another and were written interchangeably, the precise derivation of the modern name is not settled.
Avery Name History & Origins
Avery appears in England first as a surname, formed from the personal name the Normans brought with them after 1066. Medieval records show spellings such as Alvred, Averay, and Avery. As a family name it spread widely in England, and it was later carried to North America, where it also names several towns and other places.
From the surname it passed into use as a given name. For several centuries it was far more common as a surname than as a first name. In the twentieth century it was still used mainly for boys, as with the American theologian and cardinal Avery Dulles (1918 - 2008). Beginning in the later twentieth century, Avery became steadily more common for girls in the United States, and it is now given to both girls and boys there.
