What Does the Name Amelia Mean?

Amelia is a female name with two main derivations. It is most often traced to the Germanic name Amalia, formed from the element amal, usually explained as "work" or "labor" and giving the customary sense "industrious." It is also used as an English form of the Latin Aemilia, the feminine of the Roman family name Aemilius, which is traditionally connected with Latin aemulus, "rival" or "emulating." The exact sense of the old Germanic root amal is not fully certain, and the derivation of Aemilius is also debated. The two names have influenced each other in English because of their similar sound and spelling.

Amelia Name History & Origins

The Germanic name Amalia was formed from the element amal, which also appears in older compound names such as Amalberga and Amalaric and in the name of the Gothic Amali dynasty. It spread across Europe in forms including German Amalie, French Amélie, and Italian, Spanish, and Dutch Amalia. In English, Amelia appears in the Hanoverian royal family in the 18th century, including Princess Amelia Sophia Eleanor (1711 - 1786), daughter of George II, and Princess Amelia (1783 - 1810), daughter of George III. English speakers also connected Amelia with the Latin Aemilia and with the French Émilie, so the name was sometimes treated as an equivalent of Emily. Henry Fielding's novel Amelia was published in 1751; it is a well-known literary use, not the name's earliest appearance.
