What Does the Name Wyatt Mean?

Wyatt is an English name meaning "war-hardy," formed from the Old English elements wīg ("war") and heard ("hardy, bold, brave"). These combine in the personal name Wigheard, whose medieval short form Wyot - also written Wiot or Gyot - is the direct source of the surname and later given name Wyatt.

A competing explanation treats Wyot as a borrowing of the Old French Guiot, a diminutive of Guy, which comes from the Germanic Wido. Both derivations rely on the same type of medieval diminutive ending, and the surviving records do not clearly settle the question, so "war-hardy" is the usual reading rather than a certainty.

Wyatt Name History & Origins

Wyatt began as a surname and only later became a first name. Its root is the Old English personal name Wigheard, made from common Old English name elements and attested in medieval England; the Norman French form of the same name appears as Wihard or Guihard. During the Middle Ages the shortened form Wyot was widespread, and inherited family names such as Wyatt, Wyat, and Wiot grew out of it in the 1200s and 1300s.

The best-known early family of the surname were the Wyatts of Kent, whose seat was Allington Castle. Sir Thomas Wyatt (1503 - 1542), the poet and courtier of Henry VIII, belonged to it, as did his son, also Thomas Wyatt, who led a rebellion against Queen Mary in 1554.

From the surname, Wyatt also came into use as a first name in the English-speaking world, particularly in the United States. Its most widely recognized American bearer is Wyatt Earp (1848 - 1929), the lawman associated with the gunfight at the O.K. Corral in Tombstone, Arizona.
