What Does the Name Richard Mean?
Richard is a masculine name of Germanic origin, specifically Frankish, and it means "brave ruler" or "strong ruler." It comes from the Proto-Germanic compound *Rīkaharduz, made of *rīkijaz (ruler, king) and *harduz (hard, strong, brave). The first element is the same root found in other Germanic names such as Henry and Frederick, where it contributes the sense "ruler" or "powerful." The second element appears in names like Bernard and Gerard, where it contributes "hard" or "brave." Literally, the compound describes a ruler who is strong or hardy; the customary English meaning is "brave ruler." Old French Richard transmitted the name to English, and medieval Latin usually wrote it Ricardus.
Richard Name History & Origins
The name is Germanic in origin and was carried by the Franks, a Germanic people who ruled much of what is now France and western Germany. Its Old Frankish form is reconstructed as *Rīcohard, and it passed into Old French as Richard. Norman dukes bore the name in the tenth and eleventh centuries, including Richard I of Normandy (died 996), called Richard the Fearless, and his descendants Richard II and Richard III. When the Normans conquered England in 1066, they brought the name with them, and it soon appeared in English records in Latin as Ricardus.
The name became firmly established in England. It was borne by three medieval English kings: Richard I, known as the Lionheart (reigned 1189 - 1199); Richard II (reigned 1377 - 1399); and Richard III (reigned 1483 - 1485). In the church, Saint Richard of Chichester (1197 - 1253) was a bishop whose shrine at Chichester became a place of pilgrimage. From the Middle Ages onward, common English pet forms included Rick, Rich, and Dick; Dick developed as a rhyming diminutive of Rick. Other European languages have their own forms, such as Ricardo in Spanish and Portuguese, Riccardo in Italian, Ryszard in Polish, and Rikard in Scandinavian languages. Feminine forms include Ricarda and Richardine.
