What Does the Name Julie Mean?

Julie is the French feminine form of the Latin name Iulia (Julia), the feminine of the Roman family name Iulius (Julius). The customary meaning is "youthful." That gloss comes from a proposed link between Iulius and the Greek ioulos, "downy" or "first growth of beard," a quality associated with young manhood. The Latin etymology is not securely established. Roman tradition also connected the family to Iulus, son of Aeneas, but that is a legendary genealogy rather than a documented linguistic origin. A separate proposal relates Iulius to Iuppiter (Jupiter); this remains uncertain. Thus "youthful" is the traditional meaning, while the exact derivation of the Roman name is disputed.

Julie Name History & Origins

Latin Iulia was the feminine form of Iulius, the name of the Roman gens Iulia. The name was used in ancient Rome; Julia, the daughter of Julius Caesar, is one well-known bearer. In French, the Latin name became Julie, the feminine corresponding to Jules (from Latin Iulius). English took Julie from French; in English it has also been used as a familiar form of Julia. The related name Julia was also used in medieval Europe, in part through devotion to saints named Julia, such as Saint Julia of Corsica.

Saint Julie Billiart (1751 - 1816), a French nun and founder of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, is a later religious bearer of the name. In literature, Julie is the title character of Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Julie, ou la nouvelle Héloïse (1761); this is a famous literary use, not the name's origin. Julie is also used in Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, and German, usually with the same spelling.
