What Does the Name Jerry Mean?
Jerry is an English pet form, or diminutive, of several names beginning with the syllable Jer-, so it has no single etymology of its own; its meaning depends on the name it shortens. Its most common source is Gerald, a name of Germanic origin that entered English through Old French. The elements are ger (spear) and wald (rule), giving the sense 'spear ruler' or 'rule of the spear.' Another source is Jerome, from Greek Hieronymos, built from hieros ('sacred') and onoma ('name'), hence 'sacred name.' A third is Jeremiah, and its English form Jeremy, from Hebrew Yirmiyahu, traditionally explained as 'the Lord exalts' or 'the Lord will raise up.' Jerry therefore carries whichever of these meanings belongs to the fuller name it stands for.
Jerry Name History & Origins
Jerry belongs to a broad group of English familiar forms made by adding -y or -ie to a longer name, a pattern well established by the late Middle Ages (compare Harry for Henry or Ned for Edward). As a shortening of Gerald, it followed that name into England after the Norman Conquest, when Old French Gérald became common there. As a shortening of Jerome, it was supported by the standing of Saint Jerome, the fourth-century scholar who translated the Bible into Latin. Jeremiah and Jeremy were known in England from the biblical prophet's book, and Jerry served as a familiar form of both.
Jerry has also been recorded as a given name in its own right, not only as a nickname, and in the British Isles it is a standard informal form of Gerald and of Jeremiah. It is occasionally given to girls, usually as a short form of Geraldine.
The name reached popular phrases through fiction rather than through church or royal use: Pierce Egan's Life in London (1821) paired 'Corinthian Tom' with 'Jerry Hawthorn,' and the phrase 'Tom and Jerry' was later reused for the long-running animated cartoons of a cat and a mouse. The slang use of 'Jerry' for a German soldier in the First and Second World Wars is a separate development, generally explained as a shortening of 'German,' and is unrelated to the personal name's origin.
