What Does the Name Jeffery Mean?
Jeffery is a spelling variant of Jeffrey, a name of Germanic origin that entered English through Old French. It comes from Old French Jofroi (also Geoffroi), from Medieval Latin Gaufridus, from a Germanic personal name reconstructed as *Gautafridu.
The second element is *fridu, meaning "peace." The first element is usually connected with *Gaut-, referring to the Geats, a North Germanic people known from Old Norse Gautar. Read literally, the compound would mean something like "Geat-peace." Over time the first element was associated with words for God, such as German Gott, so the name is commonly explained as "God's peace." That explanation is a customary interpretation rather than the literal etymology.
It should not be confused with the separate Germanic name Godfrey, which is built from genuine words for "god" and "peace."
Jeffery Name History & Origins
The name was carried to England by the Normans after the conquest of 1066. It appears in medieval Latin records as Gaufridus and Gaufredus, and in Old French as Geoffroi and Jofroi. By the 12th and 13th centuries it was a familiar English given name. Among medieval bearers are Geoffrey of Monmouth, whose Historia Regum Britanniae spread the Arthurian stories, and the poet Geoffrey Chaucer.
Like many medieval given names, Geoffrey grew less common in England by the later Middle Ages and was revived in the 19th century along with other old names. The modern spellings Jeffrey and Jeffery both descend from the same source; Jeffery replaces the -rey of Jeffrey with -ery.
