Literally, dominicus means "of a lord" or "lordly." In Christian Latin, the word was used especially for what belongs to the Lord God, so the name's established sense is "of the Lord."
Dominic Name History & Origins
The Latin Dominicus was used as a Christian personal name. Its best-known bearer is Saint Dominic (c. 1170 - 1221), born Domingo de Guzmán in Spain, who founded the Order of Preachers, commonly called the Dominicans. The order was approved in 1216, and the saint's veneration became closely tied to the name. In Catholic Europe, the name took forms such as the Spanish Domingo, Italian Domenico, and French Dominique.
In English, Dominic appeared in the medieval period and remained in use, especially among Roman Catholics. The spelling Dominick is also used. The name was later borne by Saint Dominic Savio (1842 - 1857), an Italian student canonized in 1954, which strengthened its Catholic associations.
