What Does the Name Chloe Mean?
Chloe is the English form of the Greek name Χλόη (Chlóē), meaning "young green shoot" - the first tender growth of a plant. It comes from the Greek noun χλόη (chloē), "green shoot, young herb," which is related to χλωρός (chlōros), "pale green, greenish-yellow." That same root lies behind the English words chlorophyll and chlorine. The sense is botanical and literal rather than abstract: the name points to fresh sprouting greenery.
In ancient Greek religion, Chloe also served as a title of Demeter, the goddess of grain and agriculture, worshiped in her role as the power behind the young shoots of the fields. Greek writers mention an Athenian sanctuary of Demeter Chloe, and a related festival was held in her honor.
Chloe Name History & Origins
The name is attested in the Greek-speaking world long before it reached English. In the New Testament, Paul's first letter to the Corinthians (1 Corinthians 1:11) mentions "Chloe's household" - members of the Christian community at Corinth whose people reported quarrels in the church to Paul. Written in the middle of the first century, that reference is among the earliest surviving uses of Chloe as a personal name.
The best-known ancient literary Chloe is the heroine of Daphnis and Chloe, the Greek pastoral romance by Longus, usually dated to the second century AD. This is a famous literary use, not the name's first appearance; the New Testament mention is earlier.
Chloe entered English through both the biblical and the classical traditions and has been used in England since at least the 1600s. French uses the form Chloé, with an acute accent. The name remains in use in the English-speaking world, and the French spelling Chloé is also familiar there.
