What Does the Name Luke Mean?
Luke is the English form of the Latin biblical name Lucas, which comes from the Greek Loukas (Λουκᾶς). The Greek name is often explained as a form of the Latin Lucanus, meaning from Lucania, an ancient region of southern Italy. This geographical sense is the more literal and probable derivation.
A second, long-popular interpretation connects the name with the Latin word lux, meaning light, so that Luke is understood as light-giving or bright. That light symbolism is a customary Christian reading rather than a securely established origin of the Greek name. The similar Latin name Lucius is also connected with lux, but it is a separate name; the two should not be merged.
Luke Name History & Origins
The name is best known from the New Testament, where Loukas is named as a companion of Paul and is traditionally credited with the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles. The New Testament itself calls him the beloved physician in Colossians 4:14. Early Christian tradition, not stated in the Bible, adds that he was a Gentile and a native of Antioch. Because of this association, the name was used by Christians in Greek-, Latin-, and later European languages.
In Latin, the Greek Loukas became Lucas. That Latin form passed into medieval European languages; Old French had Luc, and English developed both Lucas and the shorter Luke. The short form became the usual English given name, while Lucas also remained in use as a surname and a given name.
A well-known modern literary bearer is Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars films. This is a recent fictional use, not the origin of the name, which comes from the biblical and classical world.
