What Does the Name Helen Mean?

Helen comes from the Greek name Helénē (Ἑλένη), the name of the Spartan queen of Greek myth. The origin of that Greek name is not securely known. The explanation most often given connects it with the Greek noun helenē (ἑλένη), which meant "torch" but could also mean a wicker basket; a second proposal links it to selēnē (σελήνη), "moon." Neither link is proved, and both Greek words may themselves have come from a pre-Greek language of the Aegean, which would make the name older than Greek itself. Ancient writers also treated the name as if it came from helein (ἑλεῖν), "to seize" or "to destroy," but that is wordplay rather than etymology: in Aeschylus's Agamemnon, the chorus puns on Helen as helenaus, helandros, and helepolis - "ship-destroying, man-destroying, city-destroying."

Helen Name History & Origins

The name is present in the earliest Greek literature. In Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, Helen is a daughter of Zeus and Leda, the wife of Menelaus of Sparta, and the woman whose departure with the Trojan prince Paris brings the Greek armies to Troy. Later Greek poets kept returning to her: Sappho used Helen's choice to leave her husband as the illustration in a poem about what people love most, and Euripides built a whole tragedy, Helen, on the tradition that she never reached Troy and that a phantom went in her place. The lyric poet Stesichorus was said to have been blinded for blaming Helen and to have recovered his sight after composing a recantation.

Greek speakers used regional forms of the name, including the Doric Helena (Ἑλένα). That form passed into Latin as Helena, which is the name of Saint Helena, the mother of the emperor Constantine, who is credited by tradition with finding the True Cross in Jerusalem. Through Christian use the Latin form spread across Europe. In medieval England the name appears in records as Elena, Elen, and Helen; the shortened English form Ellen grew out of it, while Elaine entered English through Old French Arthurian romance. Other familiar European forms include Hélène (French), Elena (Spanish and Italian), Helena (German, Polish, Portuguese), and Yelena (Russian); modern Greek uses Eleni (Ελένη). English writers later fixed the mythological Helen in the imagination with phrases such as Marlowe's "face that launched a thousand ships," and she appears again in Goethe's Faust.
