What Does the Name Felix Mean?
Felix comes from the Latin adjective felix (genitive felicis), which meant "fruitful, fertile" and also "fortunate, lucky, happy." As a personal name it is usually translated "happy" or "fortunate." The literal sense was agricultural and reproductive - "fruitful" - while the sense "lucky" or "blessed" grew from the idea of good fortune. The deeper origin of the Latin word is uncertain. The feminine names Felicia and Felicity come from the same Latin root, the latter by way of Latin felicitas ("happiness, good fortune").
Felix Name History & Origins
The name was used in ancient Rome as a cognomen, the third part of a Roman citizen's name. Lucius Cornelius Sulla, dictator of Rome in 82 - 79 BC, adopted the title Felix, meaning "Lucky," after his military victories. Other Romans bore Felix as a cognomen, and the name also appears among slaves and freedmen, where it likely reflected the general sense "fortunate."
Early Christianity brought the name into wider use. The New Testament mentions Antonius Felix, the Roman procurator of Judea before whom Paul appeared (Acts 23 - 25). Christians honored several martyrs and saints named Felix, including Felix of Nola (died c. 260) and other early Roman martyrs named Felix. Popes named Felix include Felix I (269 - 274), Felix III (483 - 492), and Felix IV (526 - 530). In the 7th century, Felix of Burgundy helped convert the East Angles and became bishop of Dunwich, an early use of the name in England.
From the Middle Ages onward, the name took different forms in European languages: Spanish and French Félix, Italian Felice, German Felix, Polish Feliks, and Russian Feliks. In English, Felix has been used since the medieval period, though it has never been among the most common English names. Later uses include George Eliot's novel Felix Holt, the Radical (1866) and the cartoon character Felix the Cat, who first appeared in 1919.
