Unfit for regular labor due to his early injury that led to a loss of speech, he tried himself as a photographer.
In 1901 he met a traveling stage hypnotist who performed a series of sessions with Edgar in an attempt to recover his voice. During the treatment, Cayce discovered his ability to put himself in a state of trance and channel the universal consciousness. From there, he could answers questions of others. Over time, his popularity increased, and he began his full practice full-time.
Cayce was married at the age of 20 and had three children.
